In 1830, when Our Lady appeared to a young nun, St. Catherine Laboure, she revealed herself inside an oval frame, standing upon the world with the words, “O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee" encircling her. Mary asked St. Catherine to have a medal struck with the image, and spoke of the medal with these words: "All who wear it will receive great graces; they should wear it around the neck. Graces will abound for persons who wear it with confidence."
On the front of the medal, Our Lady distributes manifold graces to her beloved children from her outstretched arms. On the reverse, the Marian Cross symbolizes her closeness to Christ, her Son as the Two Hearts unite in love and intercession for humanity. The twelve surrounding stars represent the Apostles, and Revelation 12:1, "A great sign appeared in heavens, a woman clothed with the sun, the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of 12 stars."
